A few things come up regularly:
- V6 water pump leaks on 3MZ-FE, 2GR-FE, and related engines — coolant residue at the front of the engine, sometimes with a sweet smell. Often bundled with timing belt or chain service depending on the platform
- Valve cover gasket leaks starting around 100,000–120,000 miles — oil burns off on the exhaust manifold, creating the smell people mistake for engine failure
- Engine coolant temperature sensor failures triggering P0125 codes
- Lower control-arm bushings on Camry and RAV4 generations, common at higher mileages
