The water pump is the cooling system's circulation pump — it pushes coolant through the engine block, head, heater core, and radiator, then back to start the loop again. When the pump fails, coolant stops moving. The engine heats up within minutes. If the driver doesn't notice and pull over, the head gasket goes next, and the repair bill multiplies by ten. Frank's Automotive in Seguin handles water-pump diagnosis and replacement — and we'll be straight with you about whether to bundle the work with related components while we have access.

What's included

A typical water-pump replacement covers:

  • Diagnosis first — cooling-system pressure test to locate the leak, weep-hole inspection for coolant residue, bearing-noise check, cooling-system scan for codes
  • Coolant drain — old fluid out, captured for proper disposal
  • Belt and tensioner removal — external pumps driven off the serpentine belt; internal pumps require timing-cover removal
  • Pump replacement — OEM or OEM-equivalent unit with new gasket or O-ring
  • Coolant refill — exact coolant type your manufacturer specifies (Dexcool, HOAT, OAT, IAT, etc. — they don't mix safely)
  • Air-pocket bleeding — modern cooling systems have bleeder ports in specific locations; skipping the bleed causes air-pocket overheating a week later
  • Pressure test after refill at operating temperature to confirm no leaks

When the water pump is driven by the timing belt, we strongly recommend doing the timing belt at the same time. The labor is essentially identical; the additional parts cost is the difference. Doing one without the other means paying for the same teardown twice.

Symptoms of a failing pump

  • Coolant leak at the front of the engine — sometimes a puddle, sometimes just residue on the block
  • Whining or rumbling that rises with engine RPM (bearing failure)
  • Wobbling pulley — visible movement at the pump pulley
  • Overheating in normal driving, especially in stop-and-go
  • Steam or sweet smell from under the hood
  • Coolant level dropping with no visible external leak

Don't drive an overheating engine. Once the temp gauge is red, you have minutes before damage spreads — pull over, shut it down, call us.

Why Frank's

ASE Certified technicians, OEM-equivalent water pumps matched to your vehicle, and the correct coolant type for your manufacturer (no "universal" coolant that ruins gasket compatibility). We bleed the system properly so you don't get an air-pocket overheat days later. 24-month / 24,000-mile warranty.

Bundle the water pump with the timing belt where applicable — we'll quote both before starting, and you decide. Request an appointment or call (830) 379-4840.
