Engine work covers the whole range — from a single misfire that triggers a check-engine light up through a full long-block replacement on a tired motor with 250,000 miles. The job that customers fear most ("I think it's the engine") is also the job where a careful diagnostic saves the most money. At Frank's Automotive in Seguin we don't open hoods speculatively — every engine repair starts with a written diagnosis, a written estimate, and your sign-off before we touch anything beyond inspection.

What we handle

Engine work breaks down into a few categories:

  • Diagnostics — Bosch OBD-II scan tools, live-data analysis, compression test, cylinder-leakdown test, smoke test for vacuum leaks, fuel-pressure verification, injector flow
  • Drivability / tune-up — spark plugs, ignition coils, plug wires (where present), throttle-body service, intake cleaning, PCV system inspection
  • Cooling system — thermostat, water pump, hoses, radiator. We catch most overheating problems here, before the head gasket pays the price
  • Timing components — timing belt or chain replacement, tensioners, idlers
  • Top-end work — valve covers and gaskets, head removal, head gasket service, valve adjustment
  • Major repair — short-block, long-block, or full engine replacement when the bottom end is finished. We can source quality remanufactured options as an alternative to new

You'll get a phone call before we go past initial inspection. No surprises on the invoice.

When to bring it in

Bring it to us if you're seeing:

  • Steady or flashing check-engine light (a flashing light means active misfire — damaging the catalytic converter — pull over)
  • Loss of power under acceleration or up hills
  • Rough idle, stalling at stops, or hard cold-starts
  • Overheating — temp gauge climbing past the middle mark in normal driving
  • Knocking, ticking, or whining that wasn't there last week
  • Visible smoke — blue (oil), white (coolant), black (rich fuel)
  • Oil consumption outside what's normal for your engine (more than a quart between changes is a flag)

Driving an overheating, knocking, or low-oil-pressure engine for another 10 miles can turn a $500 repair into a $5,000 one.
