Most vehicles have at least four filters and each one runs on its own replacement schedule. They're cheap individually, easy to forget about, and miserable to ignore. A clogged engine air filter steals horsepower and fuel economy. A clogged cabin filter restricts A/C airflow and lets pollen and dust into the cabin. An overdue oil filter recirculates the contaminants you spent money to drain out. Frank's Automotive checks them all at every oil change so you don't have to track four separate intervals on your own.
The filters most vehicles need replaced
- Oil filter — replaced at every oil change. OEM-equivalent filter from a major manufacturer, sized for your engine. Skipping this on a "drain only" oil service is how debris ends up circulating through the bearings
- Engine air filter — typically every 15,000–30,000 miles or annually. Texas dust and pollen shorten that interval. The visual check is simple: hold it up to the light. If light doesn't pass through, it's overdue. Affects acceleration and fuel economy directly
- Cabin air filter — typically every 15,000–30,000 miles. This is the one drivers forget. It filters air entering the cabin through the A/C system, so a clogged one restricts airflow, lets allergens through, and can ice up the evaporator. Cedar fever and oak pollen seasons make this an actual quality-of-life issue
- Fuel filter — depends on the vehicle. Some have an inline filter requiring replacement every 30,000–50,000 miles. Many modern vehicles have a "lifetime" filter inside the fuel tank that gets replaced only if it fails
We can also handle PCV filters, transmission filters (with fluid service), and differential breathers on vehicles that need them.
Signs filters are overdue
- Lower fuel economy — engine air filter or fuel filter
- Sluggish acceleration — engine air filter
- Weak A/C airflow — cabin air filter
- Pollen-smelling or musty cabin — cabin air filter (and possibly evaporator mold)
- Long crank or stumbling acceleration — fuel filter (older vehicles)
- Dark, gritty oil on the dipstick — oil filter wasn't changed at the last service, or it's been way too long
- Mass-airflow or fuel-trim check-engine codes — sometimes a clogged air filter is the cause
If you can't remember the last time a particular filter was replaced, it's overdue.
Why Frank's
ASE Certified, with OEM-equivalent filters matched to your vehicle — not the cheapest paper-bound option that bypasses contaminants under high airflow. Covered by our 24-month / 24,000-mile warranty, though for filters that's mostly a formality.
Most filter replacements bundle with routine service. Request an appointment or call (830) 379-4840 if you'd like a filter inspection.
